Girls Rock

The twenty-first century has proven to be the century of female music: every year more female artists are rising to the top of once male-dominated genres and kicking ass while they’re at it.

One of the hardest genres for women to break into is punk and rock, but these female bands are rocking out, and they’re here to stay.

The Paranoyds

Southern California garage rock band The Paranoyds “share a mission to craft songs with the gritty spunk and dark playfulness of a cult-classic splatter film.” Their vocals are gritty, casual, and complete their garage rock vibe. If you’re looking for pure and hard rock, look no further than The Paranoyds.

Ex Hex

Winning a Best New Music honor from Pitchfork in 2014, Ex Hex is yet another female punk rock band making a name for themselves in a male-dominated industry. Complete with energetic guitar solos and nonchalant vocals that define the genre of punk, Ex Hex is “the power trio for our generation.”

The Coathangers

From Atlanta, Georgia, The Coathangers are a punk band that prides themselves as “borrow[ing] from vintage girl group sounds and contemporary teen pop acts as much as the old-school punk and new wave outfits that inform their sound.” If you’re looking for a group that is a happy medium between Creedence Clearwater Revival and Joan Jett, check out The Coathangers.
