Seven Songs With Excellent Bridges

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

If you’re anything like me, you agree that a bridge can make or break a song. It can feel like the ultimate climax, the emotional breaking point, or the moment of clarity. A bridge differs from every other part of a song, and because of this, they stand out. In no particular order, here are my favorite songs with bridges stronger than the Golden Gate.

“All Too Well” – Taylor Swift

If there is one thing Miss Swift knows how to do, it’s building a good bridge. “All Too Well” isn’t considered one of her greatest songs for any old reason: the bridge is gut-wrenching, soul-shattering, and the epitome of pure heartbreak. Swift clearly puts her heart and soul into this track, and the song boils up really well into the bridge until her emotions completely spill over.

Best lyric: “And you call me up again just to break me like a promise / So casually cruel in the name of being honest”

“Sign of the Times” – Harry Styles

One of the first solo projects he put out, “Sign of the Times” is still considered one of Styles’ greatest songs. The track’s powerful musicality and lyrics filled with longing build a bridge of and clarity. As Styles reaches the bridge of his song, so does his voice, creating a climactic effect that breaks apart into pain.

Best lyric: “Will we ever learn? We’ve been here before / It’s just what we know”

“Not Ready to Make Nice” – The Chicks

The Chicks are no stranger to controversy, and perhaps their biggest scandal involved remarks made about President George W. Bush. The harsh comments were met with a large outcry from unhappy listeners, but The Chicks blew the criticism away with the release of “Not Ready to Make Nice.” The bridge is strong, powerful, and completely shuts down the haters.

Best lyric: “And how in the world can the words that I said / Send somebody so over the edge / That they’d write me a letter, sayin’ that I better / Shut up and sing or my life will be over”

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

“I Got So High That I Saw Jesus (feat. Miley Cyrus) – Live Recording”

Miley and Noah Cyrus’ voices paired together are an ethereal combination. Good vocals run in the family, as the two singers let their voices create magic together to reach a moving and show-stopping bridge.

Best lyric: “And he said, ‘Fathers, don’t forsake your sons / There’s so much Kingdom left to come / Just let it fill your lungs before you leave’”

Happy Without Me (feat. Joey Bada$$) – Chloe x Halle

Much like Miley and Noah Cyrus, Chloe and Halle Bailey are two sisters who are musically intertwined, working completely to their benefit. The bridge of “Happy Without Me” is one of those moments in a song where you cannot even allow yourself to finish the song, but have to go back and re-listen. Somehow Halle manages to reach incredible high notes without sounding shrill, only to close out the bridge with dramatic, lower notes that add a perfect final cadence.

Best lyric: “But I feel a little bit dumb, just a little bit sprung / Just a little too late / Oh, you call up those other chicks / I can’t stop thinking it’s lame missing you anyway”

“Young and Beautiful” – Lana Del Rey

While it is rare that a song recorded for a movie soundtrack is one of the standout tracks of an artist’s career, for Lana Del Rey this is exactly the case. Del Rey captured all the glitz and glamour of the roaring 20s, while somehow evoking the feeling of sadness and emptiness that often came with it. The bridge is a desperate and hopeful plea, ending on a dramatic, hook-like final note.

Best lyric: “All that grace, all that body / All that face makes me wanna party / He’s my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds”

“Kickstart My Heart” – Mötley Crüe

Laugh all you want, but Mötley Crüe’s hilarious and uplifting bridge is a self-celebration of success and survival (literally). The hair-metal song is electric, fast-paced, and pure fun, and the bridge is no different. Complete with a hardcore drum beat, this bridge doesn’t disappoint.

Best lyric: “When we started this band, all we needed / Needed was a laugh / Years gone by, I’d say we’ve kicked some ass”
