“Chemtrails Over The Country Club” – Single Review

In anticipation of her new era, Del Rey dropped “Chemtrails Over The Country Club,” the title track of her upcoming album scheduled to release in March. 

This single does what Del Rey does best: enchant her listeners with dark undertones and glamorous and glitzy lyricism. The single reflects on Del Rey’s time with her family friends, playing under the chemtrails which float over their heads as they sip drinks and play by the pool: “Wearin’ our jewels in the swimming pool // me and my sister just playin’ it cool // under the chemtrails over the country club.” 

“I hear [the album] Chemtrails and I think “work”, but I also think of my stunning girlfriends, who so much of the album is about, and my beautiful siblings,” said Del Rey about the song. ‘“Chemtrails” is the title track because it mentions wanting so much to be normal and realizing that when you have an overactive, eccentric mind, a record like Chemtrails is just what you’re going to get.” 

The single was accompanied by a very Lana Del Reyesque music video, complete with diamonds, vintage cars, and Americana glamour. As we watch scenes of decadence and gaud, the video slowly transitions to an American Horror Story style nightmare complete with werewolves, fire, and tornados. In much of her past music, Del Rey has touched on the dark undertones of decadence and refinement. “Chemtrails” takes a slightly more direct approach, as she and her friends transition from poolside debutants to wild and fierce werewolves of the forest. 

To introduce her new album, Del Rey started off with a catchy, melodic, and downright dreamy single. While her singles have never proven to be the greatest tracks on her albums, “Chemtrail Over The Country Club” sets the stage for an unforgettable new era. Del Rey was notoriously snubbed at the 2020 Grammy Awards; could Chemtrails Over The Country Club be the album to secure her spot in Grammys history?
