Who Is LoveMeRoommate? [Artist Interview]
LoveMeRoommate is an exciting rising artist from the Los Angeles area. He crafts songs that epitomize his Southern Californian upbringing: breezy and laid-back tracks with smooth flows. As a talented songwriter, LoveMeRoommate focuses his attention on mental health and tells stories with emotional depth and vulnerability that is especially comforting to hear within the current musical landscape. Check out our conversation with the artist below.
LoveMeRoommate is an interesting name–it really catches your attention. How did you come up with it?
“In college, my roommates were also my teammates, colleagues, coworkers, and best friends. So the word has a special meaning to me and by definition we all occupy the same home, therefore we are all roommates, and we all just want to be loved. (shoutout UCI track and field)”
What made you want to be an artist? Is there a specific moment in which you knew this is what you wanted to do?
“There was in fact, an exact moment when I realized I was going to become an artist. I was in my car healing from a depressive episode and observing the impact that music was having on my recovery, and I knew in that moment. Music provided me with hope and I wanted to pay it forward.”
What inspires you as an artist? Are there other creators you look up to?
“I pull inspiration from artists and athletes because of their growth mindsets’ to improve in their respective field, and it inspires me to do the same. I love the unapologetic charisma of Doja cat, the rhythm and flow of JID, as well as the tenacity and passion of Marlon Chito Vera. Vulnerability and introspection has been key to confidently articulating my emotions in my music.”
I love your posts on Instagram. How would you describe your aesthetic both visually and musically?
“The stylistic choices in my music, hairstyles, wardrobe, etc. all stem from my belief of living without limitations. My perception of life is that nothing is off the table and I consistently ask myself “why not?”. Any color, sound, instrument, and style is up for grabs if I feel that it represents me.”
For those unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe it?
“I create sentimental music with the aim to evoke emotion. Varying between sorrow and elation, I share my experiences in life to provide comfort and confidence through my wordplay and genuine lyrics. I am a big advocate for open conversations about mental health and I am not afraid to share the vulnerability with my excitement and hardships.”
Which song of yours, so far, would you want everyone to listen to?
“My song Wildfire (+ Remix) is one of my songs that speaks to my battle with depression and self destructive tendencies. As it can be comforting to know that others are going through similar situations, I share my story to also remind listeners that although disastrous, wildfires allow for regrowth and new beginnings.”
What is your process as an artist and songwriter?
“I write everyday, so for a majority of the time I write a lot of my songs before I even have the beats. I used to be more structured but I recently came to the understanding that sometimes I just need to have fun and allow the lyrics to fall into place. Once I have my topic/situation/melody I am able to articulate those emotions on a deeper level in my verses, and then I have a song completed :)”
What do you want to achieve as an artist? If you had a mission statement, what would it be?
“My game plan when I used to race in cross country was to compete (stay with the top guys) and know that would get me the fast times that I wanted. Similarly, my aim is to consistently evolve as an artist + release good music and trust that my success will follow. The ultimate goal from my career is financial security and to inspire others, everything else is a plus. My mission is to empower others to be confident in themselves and pursue lives that they’re proud of.”
Of your journey so far, what do you feel most proud of?
“I am most proud of my progress as an artist, as every new song I create becomes my new favorite song. I am writing every day, working towards my 10,000 hours, and seeing my improvement gets me excited for the future of my career.”
