The song builds on Bird’s americana-folk sound, while adding a rock ‘n’ roll edge that was only seen sparingly on her first album. The lyric’s theme follow the ones laid out in previously released singles: Bird is singing about a relationship that is clearly not working.

“Do you really know what it feels like // ending up alone in the middle of the night?” she sings over the opening guitar riff.

The chorus sums up that feeling of knowing everything is wrong when it should be right: “I’m stood completely drenched // Do you know what it feels like // to have water in your shoes? // Oh, it’s raining on me again // Oh, it’s raining on a sunny day.”

“‘Open up the heavens’ was written and recorded two days before I had to fly home from recording in Nashville,” Bird said in a statement about the song. “I’d heard stories about the last song you write for a record being the best, so I was searching for that in the vocal booth of RCA that evening. Halfway into the riff Dave (Cobb, the producer) pops his head in and says ‘You should really do something with that’. So I did. I sent the song to him two hours later and before I knew it, everyone was brought back in and we were tracking my favourite song on the record.”

The single follows “Headstart” and “Houdini.” All three tracks will feature on Bird’s upcoming sophomore album.
