Olivia Rodrigo-GUTS World Tour-Lisbon 6/23/2024

***Updated article WITH videos coming soon!

Okay so to preface this all— I am not much of a concert goer. NOT BY CHOICE as much as expense and opportunity. SO, I decided to change the system and try to see a popular artist on tour during the European leg. Let me tell you! I think it was SOOOO worth it! The tickets are over always significantly less expensive, the venues are smaller (depending) AND you get to travel internationally on top! A lot of times (again depending on where) taking a small vacation and attending a concert in Europe is cheaper or near the same price as transportation lodging and tickets at major US locations.

THE BEFORE

ALSO, disclaimer- I’ve spent time living in Lisbon so the ease of the whole process might be different for me— HOWEVER I also have little concert experience and NONE alone. Transportation to the venue was right on the metro lines and I was easily directed to where I needed to be by workers in the area. The line was DISNEY WORLD LONG— in total I think I waited about 2 hours, and I had floor standing-room seats. Since I got there early-ish I did get a nice spot on the floor (not too far back and pretty central). The venue, Altice Area, is a decently large venue with max occupancy at 20,000 and it was PACKED! I LOVED seeing all these different people in concert attire and AMAZING FITS throughout the entire experience from the transport into the transport out.

GET TO THE SINGING!

ALRIGHT so this was her LAST SHOW of the LAST STOP of the EUROPEAN LEG of the GUTS TOUR— I was shaking at the amazing-ness of it all! Opening for Olivia was none other than REMI WOLF— ANOTHER SCORE! She was only up there for a few songs and a particularly fun cover of “Valarie” …… I LOVE HER VOICE and was so happy to see her live and in person. It all happened so fast- but shoutout Remi- thank you for coming to Lisbon!

Here is the full set list so you can follow along! (we got almost all of GUTS AND SOUR + 2 GUTS (spilled) bonus tracks)

THE MUSIC STARTS. And out comes OLIVIA FREAKING RODRIGO! GLOWING while sporting a glittery sliver fit with sparkly makeup. Her bandmates and BGV’s also ALL QUEENS filling out the rest of the stage. The screens and lights with the close camera views— such nice visual experience.

Opening with a bang and with lots of energy was “bad idea right?” flowed by “ballad of a homeschooled girl”. The room was electric at the rockin opener the band was BANDING— the music sounded soooo good and those guitars were ON! Olivia came out having so much fun playing off the crowd and band immediately- we were all hooked!

Next came some ballads, leading with (record of the year 2023 snubbed) “vampire”. This is my FAVEEEE off of GUTS and was my most played song of last year. To hear those opening piano notes- CHILLS the build of the verse into the crescendo- the AUDIENCE SCREAMING “BLOOD SUCKER, FAME FUCKER” really did it for me. Then we got “traitor” and “driver’s license” from her debut SOUR I never thought I’d be able to hear these live (ahhhh) Her vocals were so beautiful, and everyone was locked in to her every word. The emotional “teenage dream” followed- and I felt especially moved by the lyrics when I saw all the teenagers in attendance screaming every word. (bless em’)

After that, we got another moment for GUTS as we had a quad of songs- “pretty isn’t pretty”, “love is embarrassing”, “making the bed” and “logical”. “pip” really extended the teenage angst and feelings that were already in the air. I LOVEEEE “lie” and think it’s so so relatable (as literally her whole discography is) and it was so cool to see her in this different sound, that the song delivers, live. Things took an emotional turn (living for the rocking to crying roller coaster I’m on) as “mtb” started- I really listened to the lyrics, and I was mesmerized by the maturity of the song! She is growing up yallll!  THEN STARS DESCENDED ONTO THE AUDIENCE… AND OUR GIRL WAS UP IN SKY ON A CRESCENT MOON! LOOKING LIKE A LUNAR GODDESS- SELENE-ARTEMIS FORREAL! She covered us in starlight while she serenaded us from above with “logical”.

WHILE STILL ON HER CRESCENT FLOATING, after some interaction with the audience, (SHE WAS SO CLOSE) we got one of my faves from SOUR “enough for you”. This song is just gorgeous and so raw and real. Everyone in the audience got wonderful views of her and FREAKED OUT as she flew by.

Back on stage, was “lacy”, then we got our first GUTS (spilled) track with “so american”, a fiery “jealousy, jealousy” and a lovely “happier”. “lacy” is such a pretty song, and her delivery live was exceptional- the outro always gets me! “so american” was SUCH a time, this song is SO relatable for me, I was laughing to myself as an american in the audience. “JEALOUSY, JEALOUSY”—WOW! She really went into this with attitude and flair. This has always been one of my car songs and performed live, she dialed up the angst and bump- I LOVED IT.  “happier” was so light and floaty and she really showed off how lovely the tone of her voice is. She just has qualities of drama and storytelling, in her voice AND delivery, that make you feel.

MY FAVORITE OLIVIA SONG from SOUR and a MOMENTTTT— “Favorite Crime” I had been waiting and waiting for this song and I knew it was going to be something special! She sat down with one of guitarists and the acoustic intimate vibes were perfect for this song. It was simple. It was beautiful. It was everything I wanted it to be. THAT BRIDGE! – TO HEAR THAT BRIDGE LIVE!!

DEJU VU was next, and the crowd was so involved while I was still in stunned silence (not gonna lie) don’t recall much of this one, and didn’t get any evidence of it, so sorry. LOVE this song tho!

THEN I was snapped back into reality as the most moving moment of the concert… “the grudge” began. It’s a high bar of emotions when you’re dealing with Olivia’s discography- but there is something about this song that has a different depth than the others. THIS was the one that, after the concert, I thought about immediately like WOW the feeling in the room was real! Her vocal delivery was spectacular, and it just felt like so special. I could FEEL it from her most on this song and there were times where I SAW it as well.

*Wipes tears* ENDING THE ROLLAR COASTER RIDE with “brutal”, another GUTS (spilled) track with “obsessed” and closing with “all-american bitch”. OUTFIT CHANGE INTO RED! SHES SASSY. SHES SLAYING. SHES WEARING A SASH! *idk what it was* “brutal” was the perfecttt way to bring about this ending trio of songs!  “I WANT IT TO BE LIKE-MESSY” immediately everyone is re-charged and back jumping and screaming like we weren’t just crying. (The Liv Effect) OBSESSED WAS EVERYTHING I NEEDED IT TO BE AS WELL! SOOOO HAPPY SHE DID IT-ITS MY FAVE OFF GUTS (spilled)

* I only got a short video and I hate myself for it IM SORRY*

Ending with “all-american bitch” really was the cherry on top. I always think about the song that tours use to open and close being extremely important and I think Oliva’s choices were flawless! I adore this song and its tongue and check messaging. Again, she’s growing up! This song was the perfect anthem to remind us of how she sees herself and what she wants us to see her. As an opener of her new album and a closer of WORLD TOUR— “all-american bitch” serves the light and floaty liv that we know, intertwined and then overtaken by this more angsty, rock-forward sound and attitude. I LOVE IT! I LOVE OLIVIA RODRIGO- this was such an “out of body” experience for me and she is truly one of my favorite artists so to see her live! Also, since her discography is still being built, we got SO much of it!

**My ONLY wish now is to hear “All I Want” live…. LUCKY MELBOURNE
