Rapper and musician DaBaby is under fire for homophobic comments made at the Rolling Loud Music Festival in Miami, Florida.

In a viral video, DaBaby speaks to his fans at his Rolling Loud set, saying for them to shine their flashlights if they “didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that will make you die in two to three weeks.”

The comments were met with immediate response from the crowd, with one festival-goer throwing a shoe at the rapper onstage; and the criticism didn’t stop there.

DaBaby took to Twitter to respond to the critics, saying “Anybody who done ever been effected by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody.”

But despite DaBaby’s apology, celebrities took to social media to address the controversy, with Dua Lipa stating that she was “horrified” by his comments: many fans have called for her to remove the “Levitating ft. DaBaby” remix from streaming services.

Perhaps the biggest response to DaBaby was Elton John, a long-time HIV spokesperson, and advocate. In a five-part Twitter thread, John spoke about the long-time stigmas placed on the LGBTQ+ community surroundings HIV and AIDS.

Demi Lovato also weighed in on the comments: they shared an Instagram post with the caption “hot people listen to the original version of levitating.”

A series of celebrities have come to DaBaby’s defense. No stranger to controversy, rapper T.I. stated “If Lil Nas X can kick his sh*t in peace… so should dababy #equality.” Following an Instagram live in which the rapper took to the platform to again come to the defense of DaBaby, he has since refrained from commenting.
