Artist Spotlight: Brent Faiyaz
When you listen to a Brent Faiyaz song, you hear a certain old soul that distinguishes him from his R&B contemporaries, an ache in his voice that hearkens back to the eras of Marvin Gaye and Al Green. I was first drawn to Faiyaz’s music from his 2018 hit “Trust”. His hushed, silky smooth vocals float over hard-hitting trap beats with ease and self-assuredness.
“I think that’s what’s hitting people about me – a voice from the black male perspective that isn’t so overly aggressive and hasn’t been in R&B for a long time,” Faiyaz revealed to FACT Rated of his sultry singing style.
In addition to his distinct sound, Brent Faiyaz clings to his individuality as an artist. He’s remained an independent artist throughout his career, even in light of recent successes. Forging his own path in the industry apart from a major label contract
Born Christopher Brent Wood in Columbia, Maryland, Faiyaz first began making music at the age of 12 and uploading original songs on SoundCloud by age 14. He formed the group Sonder with producers Dpat and Atu in 2016.
