5 Artists To Check Out In 2024 (So Far)
While 2024 has started a bit rocky, the music scene continues to thrive after the COVID-19 pandemic. As many legends and newcomers continue to put out new music, here are some new artists that you should watch this upcoming year.
1. Rachel Chinouriri
Hailing from the UK, singer-songwriter Rachel Chinouriri is putting her stamp in the indie-pop music scene. After garnering attention from TikTok with her song “So My Darling,” she has been a full force. She recently released her music video for her track “Never Need Me,” which features an appearance from Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh. The song has since garnered 1 million streams on Spotify. Adele also spoke about Chinouriri at her recent show in Las Vegas, saying she will attend her upcoming show at the Echo in Los Angeles, CA. Her debut album, What a devastating turn of events is out on May 3.
2. Amaarae
For those that enjoy music from Tyla and Tems, Amaarae is someone that should also be within that rotation. Her latest album, Fountain Baby, was named one of the best albums of 2023 (including me). It blends R&B, afrobeats and pop in the best way possible.
3. Mk.gee
Mitchel Gordon, aka Mk.gee, is also a hiddem gem that is a must-watch this year. Since releasing his debut single “I Know How You Get” in 2017, Mk.gee has worked with Omar Apollo, Dijon and Charlotte Day Wilson and has now released his debut studio album Two Star & The Dream Police, which is noted as genre-surfing bedroom pop that’s lofi yet bright.”Check out his song “How many miles” below.
4. LOONY
After Shazaaming her song “Raw” from an episode of Insecure, I was infected by Loony’s classic R&B sound. Her 2021 album soft thing and 2020 EP Joyride are must-listens for those that love artists like Joyce Wrice, Tiana Major 9 and Ambre. She will be heading out on a US headlining tour beginning in May. 5. Chappell Roan
As one who loves a 80’s synth pop hit, newcomer Chappell Roan has been delivering. Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess was also one of my favorite albums to come out of 2023. Listed as Vevo Dscvr artist, opening for Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts Tour and is on a list of music festivals this year, Roan is one to look out for this year. I am already placing my bet with her as a Best New Artist nominee at the Grammy’s in 2025.
