“Quarterback” – Single Review

The group managed to record and release an EP, appropriately named Remote, play a handful of virtual “live” shows, and put out some truly wacky music videos. 

All that, and yet they’re still hard at work! The band just released the deluxe version of Remote, with three new tracks, including new single “Quarterback.”

“Quarterback” shares the same quirky, pop production that the rest of the EP’s songs have, along with lyrics that are fun to sing, but take some time to untangle. 

“‘Cause summer’s gone //  I’m alone wishin’ // for your call // starting to freak // I’m not sure if he’s comin’ over for the night // Quarterback’s fine,” drummer Cole Preston sing-songs on the chorus, the upbeat production masking the uncertainty and anxiety of the lyrics. 

Singer and guitar player Dylan Minnette told Zane Lowe, “Cole started this idea a long time ago, probably years ago. Honestly, we’ve always really liked it, but then last year when we were doing Remote, that got brought back into question, and we were sort of trying to self-produce that one, where the other ones we were working on them with other people.

We decided, ‘Ah, it doesn’t fit enough with the rest of the songs.’ So by the time, Remote came out, we were just like, ‘Well, I feel like these other songs we started, including ‘Quarterback’, aren’t necessarily going to work on the next thing we’re making, the next album. Also, what’s the point of holding things over?’ We used to be like: we’ll just wait to put it out. It’s like, Nah, you got it now, and it’s good, just get out of the way and put it out.”

This is the first time Preston has sung lead for the group, but I’m sure we can expect to hear his vocals at the forefront on future Wallows tracks!
