Her 2019 debut album Pang was full of catchy melodies, memorable lyrics and experimental production. Polachek is one of many artists making hyperpop music, which is electronic/dance music cranked all the way to 11. Think Charli XCX or 100 gecs

Polachek straddles the line between pop and hyperpop, creating songs that play with sounds and production, but not so much that she’ll scare off any Top 40-loving listeners. “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings,” her biggest hit yet, is a good example of this.

Polachek has been relatively quiet this year, but she couldn’t let us finish 2020 without giving us something. Last week, she released “Breathless,” a cover of the Corrs’ 2000 hit. It’s a song that she has frequently performed live, so fans were excited to get an official studio version. Polachek’s version obviously updates the track, with futuristic pop production and distorted vocals.

If, like me, you are impatiently waiting for her next album, don’t worry; she has announced plans to release a collection of Pang remixes early next year. The collection will include collaborations with George Clanton, Chino Moreno and Toro y Moi. Even though it’s not new music, it’s still something. Guess it will have to tide us over until Polachek’s next album.
