Some people are far from their families, others might be going through an ill-timed breakup, but no matter the reason, it\u2019s undeniable: sad Christmas songs are the best. Here\u2019s my list of the tearjerker holiday songs you need on your playlist this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

10. \u201cSnow in California\u201d (Ariana Grande)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ariana Grande is one of the few pop stars these days that understands the importance of a good Christmas song. The artist has released two holiday EPs and dozens of Christmas singles, all to the delight of her fans. On this track, Grande is begging for snow in California to delay her boyfriend\u2019s flight and keep him with her in the Golden state a little longer. \u201cJust make it snow in California,\u201d she croons. \u201cI\u2019ll even settle for rain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is one of those Christmas songs that\u2019s not technically <\/i>a Christmas song, but those are usually the best kind. In this song from the soundtrack for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas<\/i>, Dolly Parton sings about going through hard times, likening it to \u201ca hard candy Christmas.\u201d even though she\u2019s down in the dumps, the country superstar refuses to give up: \u201cBut still I won\u2019t let \/\/ sorrow bring me way down.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

This track featured on Nina Nesbitt\u2019s 2019 album, <\/span>The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change<\/span><\/i>, but the singer gave it a holiday-infused makeover to make it as Christmas-y as possible. 7. “If We Make It Through December” (Merle Haggard)<\/h2>\n

Written by Merle Haggard, this is one of those Christmas songs that reminds us that this time of year can be hard for so many people. The Staves\u2019 delicate holiday track is one of my all-time favorites. The song describes that weird feeling of not having someone in your life, but still thinking about them. \u201cAre you watching Home Alone, too?\u201d the group sings wistfully and without malice. Okay, so maybe this one can\u2019t be technically classified as sad, but this is my list, so I get to make the decisions. This John Lennon-Yoko Ono classic is about evaluating what you\u2019ve done over the past year, and thinking about what you can do to make the world a better place. 4. “Please Come Home For Christmas” (Eagles)<\/h2>\n

I love the Eagles in a completely unironic and fanatical way. They\u2019re one of the greatest rock bands of the 70s – if not all time – so it makes sense that they\u2019d put out an equally amazing Christmas song (well, cover, but let\u2019s not get nitpicky). \u201cOh, what a Christmas to have the blues,\u201d Don Henley sings in that unmistakable rasp, before begging his lost love, \u201cplease come home for Christmas \/\/ if not for Christmas, by New Year\u2019s night.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/3QIoEi8Enr9uHffwInGIsC?si=13db7da2554a45c0[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

3. “Last Christmas” (Wham!)<\/h2>\n

You all knew this one was coming. Forget being one of the best sad Christmas songs, Wham!\u2019s immortal holiday hit is one of the best Christmas songs ever, period. The bouncing synths contrast with George Michael\u2019s retelling of a love affair gone south: \u201cMy God, I thought you were \/\/ someone to rely on \/\/ Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on.\u201d Instantly singable and somehow universally relatable, this is one of those songs guaranteed to get everybody singing along.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https:\/\/youtu.be\/E8gmARGvPlI” align=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

2. “River” (Joni Mitchell)<\/h2>\n

This is my number one, all-time greatest not-really-Christmas Christmas song. I mean, come on, how does it get better than Joni Mitchell? The song starts with the \u201cJingle Bells\u201d melody played on the piano, before Mitchell launches into those heartbreaking lyrics known the world over. She described the Christmas preparations going on around her before talking about what\u2019s really on her mind: \u201cI made my baby say good-bye.\u201d It\u2019s a timeless track that takes on new meaning around the holidays, making it the perfect song to put on if Christmas stress has got you wishing for a river to skate away on.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/0DAmSYQW9kq9gQNDI002KP?si=4d8ffa3aa6e14439[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

1. “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” (Darlene Love)<\/h2>\n

I could argue that this is a strong contender for best Christmas song of all time, but that\u2019s another list for another time. For now, let\u2019s get into what makes it the greatest sad Christmas tune. One, we\u2019ve got the incredible, out-of-this-world vocals of Darlene Love. When she wails, \u201cBaby, <\/span>please<\/span><\/i> come home,\u201d you get goosebumps. Two, it\u2019s got Phil Spector\u2019s famous Wall of Sound production (I\u2019m choosing to overlook the fact that he is a convicted murderer.) And reason number three\u2026.well, come on!
