She\u2019s smashed record after record, and proved that being a Disney star doesn\u2019t relegate you to the kiddie crowd – her album even comes with a \u201cParental Advisory\u201d sticker.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, when you\u2019re the current It Girl, the talk isn\u2019t always all positive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Last week, Hole<\/a> frontwoman Courtney Love accused Rodrigo of stealing her intellectual property: namely, the image of a prom queen with runny mascara. The image is featured on the cover of Hole\u2019s 1994 album <\/span>Live Through This<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”27654″ img_size=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Love took to Instagram to chastise Rodrigo, posting a picture from a recent photoshoot that shows Rodrigo dressed as a prom queen, complete with mascara tears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Spot the Difference! #twinning,” Love wrote in the caption on Instagram, before getting a little more heated on Facebook. “It was rude of her, and (Rodrigo’s record label) geffen not to ask myself or (‘Live Through This’ cover photographer) Ellen von unwerth.”<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She also commented that she\u2019s waiting for Rodrigo to send her flowers and an apology note.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”27659″ img_size=”full”][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The similarity between the images is undeniable. Rodrigo and her creative team were obviously influenced by this album cover. However, is it fair to say that Love owns the idea of a prom queen in distress?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A quick Google search of the phrase \u201ccrying prom queen\u201d brings up images of Stephen King\u2019s Carrie White, songs like \u201chomecoming queen?\u201d by Kelsea Ballerini<\/a> and \u201cprom dress\u201d by mxmtoon<\/a>, and tons of Getty stock images of prom queens in tears. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”27662,27663,27664,27665″ img_size=”medium”][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Intellectual property is defined as \u201c<\/span>a work or invention that is the result of creativity, such as a manuscript or a design, to which one has rights and for which one may apply for a patent, copyright, trademark, etc.\u201d So, did Courtney Love invent crying at prom? If so, why hasn\u2019t she raised this complaint with any of the other artists who have been influenced by the <\/span>Live Through This <\/span><\/i>album cover?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t to say that Rodrigo didn\u2019t rip off Hole; she did. That\u2019s kind of the point of these kinds of photoshoots. Major magazines like Vanity Fair and Vogue are constantly presenting today\u2019s celebrities as the stars of yesteryear – Margot Robbie as Marilyn Monroe, Taylor Swift as Joni Mitchell. Sometimes it’s a music video – see One Direction’s “Kiss You” video, where they do Elvis’ “Jailhouse Rock.” Other times, it’s simply a photoshoot, like Zendaya doing Michael Jackson.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”nivo” interval=”3″ images=”27667,27668,27669,27670″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This isn\u2019t necessarily a right-or-wrong situation, but it raises an interesting set of questions: who truly owns a concept? How do you decide when something has become so ubiquitous that you can no longer claim it as your own? Is it even possible for today\u2019s artists to credit every single person they\u2019ve been inspired by?
