[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I\u2019m calling it now: 2021 is the year of Olivia Rodrigo. Last week, she released her debut album <\/span>SOUR<\/span><\/i>. It\u2019s already amassed a billion streams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To catch up anyone who hasn\u2019t been watching the Disney darling\u2019s meteoric trail up the charts: Rodrigo, star of Disney+ show <\/span>High School Musical: The Musical: The Series<\/span><\/i>, released her first single, \u201cdrivers license,\u201d in January. The song went No. 1, inspired an SNL skit<\/a> and turned the internet against the suspected subject of the song (Rodrigo\u2019s costar, Joshua Bassett<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With the release of singles \u201cdeja vu\u201d and \u201cgood 4 u,\u201d Rodrigo proved she was no flash in the pan, and the world eagerly awaited her first album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SOUR <\/span><\/i>is an explosion of emotion; from anger to sadness, from gleeful name calling to teary pleas, Rorigo does it all and does it well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She kicks off the album with \u201cbrutal,\u201d a pop-punk recitation of all the things she\u2019s already so over at the ripe age of seventeen. \u201cThey say these are the golden years \/\/ but I wish I could disappear,\u201d she chants over grinding guitars, before summing it all up with a laugh: \u201cGod, it\u2019s brutal out here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Brutal is right. Rodrigo shows her song\u2019s subjects no mercy – and why should she?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There are no love songs on this album. Rodrigo goes from pissed off (\u201cGood for you \/\/ you\u2019re doing great out there without me, baby \/\/ like a damn sociopath\u201d) to brokenhearted (\u201cAnd don\u2019t you think I loved you too much \/\/ to be used and discarded?) in no time flat. The whiplash of emotions mirrors how catastrophic everything feels when you\u2019re young.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She finds time to wish she could stop comparing herself to strangers on the internet with \u201cjealousy, jealousy\u201d (\u201cI think I think too much \/\/ \u2018bout kids who don\u2019t know me\u201d) and wish lost friends well on \u201chope ur ok\u201d (\u201cDon\u2019t know if I\u2019ll see you again someday \/\/ but if you\u2019re out there, I hope that you\u2019re okay\u201d), but the album\u2019s strongest points are when she\u2019s screaming her heartbreak out to us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rodrigo’s success as an artist lies in her total lack of artifice. Every song is almost painfully real, and fans respond well to vulnerability (see Taylor Swift, one of Rodrigo’s biggest influences).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The songs of <\/span>SOUR <\/span><\/i>are guaranteed to be sung all summer long and used to caption many an Insta post. With this album, Olivia Rodrigo has shown the world that she is here to stay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
